Steve Monroe was born in Southern California and raised mostly in Washington state. With his parents separated at just three years old, Steve moved up and down the West Coast, back and forth between Mom and Dad, eventually attending eight elementary schools and three junior highs before settling into four years of high school in Tumwater, Washington.

He learned early that the fastest way to turn a room full of strangers into friends was to make them laugh. His father's words stayed with him: there are no strangers, only friends you haven't met yet. Steve became comfortable being the new kid. More than comfortable. He became good at it.

After high school Steve moved back to Southern California for college. He bartended, connected with strangers every shift, and honed the instincts that would define everything that came after. Eventually college led to the corporate world, and it was there that he was fired from a computer tech job for his ongoing antics. He made the decision that changed everything. Get paid for being himself instead of punished for it.

Within a couple of years Steve was traveling up and down that familiar West Coast, performing in comedy clubs, casinos, and competitions . Over a two decades of featuring and headlining followed, and the stage has become home in a way no single address ever had.

But the stage was never the only place the stories lived.

They lived in notebooks. In phone folders. In thirty years of poems written at the highest highs and the most broken-open lows of a life fully lived. In January 2026 a single therapy session asked the right question, and seventeen days later Steve released his debut album Fair Exchange under the artist name MONROE . Ten tracks.
